Requirements for Permit Application Submittal

  • Application (PDF)
  • 1 Diagram or drawing of the Basement floor plan - include:
    • Designated use and size of each room.
    • Location and size of windows.  Egress window required in each sleeping room.
    • Closet locations
    • Show location of smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
    • Bathroom layout.
  • NOTE:  If the plans and details are not complete or information is missing the time to process your permit will be extended or it maybe returned if emailed in.

    Do not send a credit card authorization form, Building Inspections will contact you for payment method when the permit is approved.

Fee & Permit Process

The Fee for a Basement Finish Permit is $60/room with a maximum fee of $150. Plus a state surcharge of $1.00 for Building, $1.00 for Mechanical and $1.00 for Plumbing.  The permit is an all-inclusive permit.  The Plumbing, Mechanical and Building work are all included in 1 permit.

  • Review time is 5-7 business days.  During the busy construction months longer delays may occur.
  • Once your plan has been reviewed you will be contacted to come pickup and pay for your permit.
  • When your permit has been paid for and you have the approved plans, you may start your work and schedule inspections. 
  • When scheduling Inspections please plan at least 2 business days out.  During the busy construction months longer delays may occur.   

General Information

  • If the homeowner is hiring contractors such as a plumber, please put the name of the contractor on the application sub-contractor list.
  • If adding a fireplace, please designate on the application make and model.
  • The Electrical permit is obtained through the State of MN.
