In early February the city advertised for bids for the construction of a 15,000 square foot senior/activity center to replace the existing, approximately 5,000 square foot, Mary Ann Young Senior Center. The current building was built in 1982 and the community has outgrown the space. The new facility will include a senior lounge/gathering space, dining facilities for up to 225 people, and several activity areas for senior programming. The facility will also include activity rooms that will be available for use by residents.
The new facility will be built adjacent to the existing senior center in Aquatore Park. Six construction companies bid on the project and a public bid opening was held on February 19. After reviewing all the bids submitted the city council awarded the contract to the low bidder, Ebert Construction. Construction on the new facility will begin this spring and should be completed by the end of 2019. Once the new facility is occupied, the existing Mary Ann Young Senior Center will be demolished. The area of the existing facility will then be returned to park land.
