Harmful Algae Bloom

With the increase in temperatures and a lot of sunshine, it is common for Minnesota water bodies to produce harmful algae blooms. Some can make pets and humans sick. Pets, especially dogs, are susceptible to harmful algae because they swallow water while swimming and doing activities in the water like retrieving a ball.  Keep an eye out for signs of a recent bloom, such as green scum on the shoreline.  When in doubt, stay out. If you are exposed, be sure to wash off with fresh water immediately afterwards.  Unfortunately, blue green algae cannot be eliminated from water bodies.

Help reduce the chances of having algae blooms in water bodies by taking the following steps:

  • Reduce the amount of phosphorus and nitrogen used for lawn care.
  • Wash cars on the lawn or at a car wash so the soapy water does not enter the nearby water body.
  • Rake up leaves and grass clippings (please do not dump them in the buffers along water bodies).
  • Leave the natural buffer along water bodies, the natural vegetation cleans the water that washes off prior to the water going into the water body.
  • Do not over water.
