Did you know this about wetlands?

The Blaine Wetland Sanctuary is home to 4 types of habitats and preserves over 500 acres of open space for environmental quality and the public’s enjoyment. It has 1.75 miles of trails – parts are boardwalk, paved, and gravel.   You will find rich fen, poor fen, wet meadow, and upland forest habitats.

A fen is a peat-forming wetland that receive nutrients from a variety of sources such as precipitation, drainage or groundwater.  They are able to support a diverse plant and animal community.  A rich fen contains abundant nutrients when compared to a poor fen.  Fens are thousands of years old and have deteriorated due to man-made development.

A wet meadow is a type of marsh that commonly occurs in poorly drained areas.

Upland forest is characterized by plants adapted to shade and rapid nutrient cycling. You will find an abundance of oak and aspen at the Blaine Wetland Sanctuary.

Visit the Blaine Wetland Sanctuary to see these habitats and wildlife that thrive there.  While you're there, post your pictures on social media and tag us!  #BlaineWetlandSanctuary, #BWSBlooms, #BWSWildlife
