Long Holiday Weekend
The long Memorial Day weekend is here. Many people will be hooking up a trailer and heading out of town, here are a few tips for safely pulling a trailer.
- Double check the hitch connection.
- Chains should be crossed.
- All tail/brake lights must be functioning.
- Be sure to have a spare tire and jack on hand in the event a tire goes flat.
- Secure your load, this includes bicycles, paddle boards, and anything else that you are towing.
If traveling in an RV, be sure that all children are properly secured in a car seat. Securing children in a car seat is tricky in an RV as they are not tested or even made for car seats to be installed. Consider traveling in a vehicle where everyone can buckle up and car seats are properly installed.
Secure Your Home
Before leaving home, double check that all doors and windows are closed and locked. Tell a trusted neighbor when you leave and when you expect to return.
Give your home that occupied appearance by having a trusted neighbor park in your driveway and collect the mail so it is not left in the mailbox over the long weekend. Consider using a timer on an interior light.
If you are staying home this weekend, be a good neighbor and report any suspicious people, cars, or behavior in your area by calling 763-427-1212.
Long holiday weekends can be a prime time for burglars searching neighborhoods that look like no one is around. If you have an alarm system, call the monitoring station and let them know you will be away.
