Blaine Biz Connect is a monthly e-newsletter to keep you up to date on development happenings in the City of Blaine. From commercial to industrial to residential, Blaine is one of the fastest growing cities in Minnesota and always has new and exciting projects on the horizon.

In this newsletter, you will learn about featured developments, groundbreakings, grand openings, new businesses coming to Blaine, and recent approvals by the Blaine City Council.

Featured Development - Cedar Point Apartments


Cedar Point is a 138 unit market rate apartment building that is under construction at the corner of 117th Avenue and Ulysses Street. Rents are anticipated to range from $1,000 to $2,000 depending on the size and location of the units. All units will have covered decks, granite countertops, stainless steel kitchen appliances, full sized washer/dryer in the units, and tile flooring.

The common area will include a gathering area with coffee bar, fireplace, outdoor fire pit, and lounge area. Separate rooms will be available for fitness equipment, yoga classes, and conference business meetings. Heated, underground parking is also available for residents. Construction began in July.      

Recent City Council Approvals

Spire Credit Union

Spire Credit Union


On July 8, the city council approved the construction of a new Spire Credit Union branch near Northtown Mall. The new facility will be located across the street from their current building on University Avenue. The 5,000 square foot building with a drive-thru will offer a high quality experience for customers and staff. Construction should being this fall.

X-Golf


On July 8, the city council approved X-Golf at Northtown Mall. X-Golf offers six golf simulator bays with food, beverages, and a bar. X-Golf is great for leagues, corporate outings, tournaments, and casual golfers.

Fresh Picked Pizza Logo

Fresh Picked Pizza


On July 8, the city council approved the construction of a new 5,000 square foot restaurant called Fresh Picked Pizza. The restaurant will be located at the southeast corner of 87th Avenue and Central Avenue. Fresh Picked Pizza will offer both baked and take home pizzas. Fresh Picked Pizza has a current location in Shoreview. Construction is anticipated to start this fall.

Arroyo Villas


Hedberg Homes will be developing a 22 lot, villa style subdivision at 115th Avenue and Ulysses Street called Arroyo Villas. Floor plans provide 1,800 – 1,900 square foot units in an estimated price range of $280,000 - $400,000.
The Goddard School

The Goddard School


Goddard School received approvals on July 8 to construct at a 10,000 square foot child care and early learning center at 126th Avenue and Ulysses Street. The school will serve infant through preschool aged children and have an enrollment of approximately 150 students. Construction is expected to start this fall.

Kwik Trip under construction

Kwik Trip


Kwik Trip broke ground on their fifth store in Blaine at the northeast corner of 117th Avenue and Ulysses Street. This store will be very similar to others in Blaine however, it will not have a car wash. The building should be open sometime in the late fall.
Aldi under construction

ALDI


Aldi began the remodel of a portion of the former Best Buy building at the corner of 109th Avenue and Highway 65. Aldi will occupy 20,000 square feet which is about half of the building. The remainder of the building is still available for lease. Aldi plans on opening in November.

City of Blaine Staffing Changes


After a 40 year career in the public sector, including over 10 years in Blaine, City Manager Clark Arneson retired on July 26. Clark also worked for the cities of Bemidji, Staples, Chaska, and Bloomington. He became the city manager in Blaine in 2008.

On July 8, the city council named Michelle Wolfe as the new city manager. Ms. Wolfe currently serves as the deputy city manager in Aurora, CO and previously worked for the cities of Cottage Grove and Arden Hills. She will start in Blaine on September 16. 

After 33 years at the City of Blaine, Planning and Community Development Director, Bryan Schafer, retired on July 31. Bryan started with the city in June of 1986 as a code compliance officer. In 1990, Bryan became a planner with the city and eventually the principal planner. He became the Planning and Community Development Director in 2000. Current Economic Development Coordinator, Erik Thorvig has been named as Bryan’s replacement.

The 3M Open winner, Matthew Wolff, joined Ben Crenshaw and Tiger Woods as the only players in history who won a PGA Tour event and NCAA individual title in the same year.
